Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University
Boonyawee Yeeluk
"Traveling makes me grow up." I thought that it was time to travel again. My name is Miss Boonyawee Yeeluk. I am 6th year medical student from Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University. I come from Thailand. My nickname is Bim. So the people in Nagasaki University called me "Bim san". How did I apply to take a course here? This began when Ikematsu sensei went to be a speaker in Thai forensic medicine conference. At that time, I realized that Japanese style of forensic medicine was so interesting. And my faculty provides the opportunities for medical students to choose what they would like to learn more apart from our curriculum for two weeks. It is called "Elective Program". Thus I decided to go to Ikematsu sensei's work place for my elective program. It was department of forensic medicine, Nagasaki University. Then the impressive story in my life started.

At the first day of my elective program, I met Ikematsu sensei and he asked me that what was your purpose. I showed him about my list that I wanted to know. Actually, my purposes were about to explore  the different point of death investigation and style of autopsy between Japan and Thailand. Moreover, I would like to learn about the innovation for autopsy, in Japan. He took me a walk around his department. He introduced the new teachers to me. And the most exciting thing of the first day was AmiVoice Forensic Medicine. This program was created by Ikematsu sensei. It solved the problem when forensic pathologist must perform an autopsy and must take a record in paper at the same time. Its special function is taking a record by forensic pathologist's voice. I thought that how brilliant Ikematsu sensei was. I hoped that this program will be developed and used worldwide in the future so I can try it once in my life.

Two weeks of my elective program, I attended eight cases of autopsy. I think that style of autopsy in Nagasaki University and my university is different. I have updated about style of autopsy in my university. I concluded the difference point into 3M which were Man, Materials and Method. First of all, Man in my university composed of a forensic doctor, an assistant officer and a photographer. But in Nagasaki University also had a team of policemen and policewomen. And also had a dentist. Second is Materials,  the most important point was that we did not have AmiVoice Forensic Medicine. Third is Method. In my university, we took pituitary gland and bladder outside in some cases. We did not cut muscular layer, too. We cut each organ in slices, bring every pieces made in order and took a photo. But sensei selected one slice to take a photo. We do CT scan in some cases. We do not measure biochemistry level in all cases. The dead body in my university comes with their clothes and we record the detail of clothes before taking it off. However, each university has own style of autopsy, so this is a good chance for me to study how advantage of each style.

More than autopsy room, I attended diatom test. This was the first time for attention of diatom test. I also attended sensei's experiment, too. I got a chance to go the 66th Kyushu meeting of Japanese society of legal medicine. I was there as a member of Nagasaki autopsy team. I was so proud of it. Even though, I could not understand all of it because they spoke Japanese language, but I could touch how warm welcome of this family was. Family of people who involved in death investigation was a small family. But it was very impressive and wonderful for me. I really wish I will belong one of this family.

I knew a lot of senseis in department of forensic medicine, Nagasaki University. All of you were so kind to me. I learned a lot and had fun a lot because of you. I also knew new friends. Moe Kondo San, she was very friendly and she is interested in forensic medicine as well.  Every meals that I ate with all of you after finished work, was a memorable moment. I got an experience and learned forensic world in many aspects from Ikematsu sensei. It is like I opened my new world and travelled around through the impact conversation. Ikematsu sensei extremely inspired me to make a better things for my country like he dedicated for Japan. I hope that I will follow his pathway to make something great for Thailand, too.

If you wish to get precious experiences like me, please come to spend time at Nagasaki University. Especially, the department of forensic medicine was the best choice that I made a decision and it was one of the best time in my life. In Nagasaki, I also had enormous cultural experiences like Kunchi festival, traditional food and lovely people. "No place is like your home, but you can feel like staying at home, here."
