Summary:
The Virtopsy group routinely performs post-mortem investigations using forensic imaging methods for more than 15 years. The amount of new image modalities and techniques used in forensic medicine (i.e. PMCT, PMCTA, MRI imaging, image guided tissue sampling, surface documentation) changes the requirements for forensic pathologists in Switzerland and other parts of the world. The increased use of forensic imaging therefore has a huge influence on the medical and scientific training programs at the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Zurich. Upon this talk, it will be explained how different training programs are set up and how forensic imaging is taught to different audiences.
First, the layout, structure and workflows of the Institute of Forensic Medicine are introduced. This provides the framework for the different training programs. This includes courses in forensic medicine for medical students, the preparations for the board certifications in forensic medicine and the Virtopsy and CAS courses aimed at teaching forensic imaging to external experts.
As the Institute of Forensic Medicine is part of the University of Zurich, research is an integral part of our work. In the last part of this talk, it is explained, how researchers are trained and examples for currently conducted research projects are presented. |
