ACTA MEDICA NAGASAKIENSIA seeks
to provide a forum for the discussion of all aspects of medicine.
We welcome original, unpublished papers for possible publication.
In addition manuscripts that deal with case reports, short
communications, and letters to the editor as well as review
articles will be considered for publication. The guidelines
for this journal are essentially in accordance with the "Uniform
Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals." (The
complete document appears at www.icmje.org.)
Editorial Policies
Submissions should be accompanied with the authors’ written
confirmation that research contained in the manuscript has
not been published and is not under consideration elsewhere.
All authors listed on a manuscript should agree to its submission
and content, as determined in the Uniform Requirements for
Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals. All authors
should also approve revisions to text or authors.
Editorial board members as well as a large group of external
reviewers who have broad expertise in research areas of medicine
shall provide fair and thorough evaluation of manuscripts
submitted to ACTA MEDICA NAGASAKIENSIA. Editors
and reviewers are expected to maintain a strict ethical code
regarding confidentiality of the material under review.
Editorial board members and reviewers will disclose their
conflict of interest that could inappropriately influence
his or her judgment. Any relationships with a manuscript
and participants in review will be revealed.
After review, authors will be promptly informed of editorial
decisions. Manuscripts will not be returned. The copyright
for articles that have been accepted in this journal shall
be transferred from authors to the Editorial Board of ACTA
MEDICA NAGASAKIENSIA. The form of copyright transfer
will be sent to the corresponding author with galley proofs.
Manuscript preparation
The manuscript should be submitted with a cover letter stating:
(1) That the manuscript is being submitted for consideration
for publication in ACTA MEDICA NAGASAKIENSIA. Please specify
the category of the submitted manuscript.
(2) That the manuscript has not been published or is not
under consideration for publication elsewhere.
(3) That all authors have read and approved the content and
the authorship of the submitted manuscript.
Format and Style
Manuscripts should, in principle, be prepared using Microsoft Word
and written in clear and grammatically correct English.
The manuscripts that are not in the style
of ACTA MEDICA NAGASAKI ENSIA or not in good idiomatic English
will be returned to the author without being reviewed. For manuscripts
written by authors whose first language is not English, the manuscript
should be checked by a native English speaker to ensure the accuracy of
the language. The use of automated proofreading tools such as DeepL or
Grammarly is acceptable as an alternative. Terminology and abbreviations
not consistent with internationally accepted guidelines should be avoided.
The manuscript should be typed double-spaced on one side
only of A4 size paper (210_297 mm) throughout including tables
and figure legends with generous margins. Numbering of lines
in the margin is desirable to facilitate the review. Consecutive
numbering of all pages is required, with the title page as
page 1. The manuscript should follow the order starting as
a new page: (a) title page, (b) abstract, (c) text (introduction,
materials and methods, results and discussion), (d) acknowledgments,
(e) references, (f) tables, (g) figure, and (h) figure legends.
Abbreviations for scientific units must confirm to the System
International (SI units). Please note that footnotes are
not allowed.
Title Page
Title: The title should be informative and brief.
Names and Affiliations of Authors: Full names (first name,
middle name and last name) and affiliations (names of institutions
and subsidiary laboratories or departments, city and country)
should be described for all authors. The name, complete address
including postal code, telephone and fax numbers, and an
e-mail address should be described for the corresponding
author.
Running Title: A brief running title not exceeding 50 characters
including spaces) should be provided.
Abstract
The abstract should be no more than 250 words and indicate
the content of the manuscript. All important terms relevant
to the content of the manuscript should be incorporated in
the abstract. Abbreviations should be kept to an absolute
minimum; however, if they are needed, they should be defined
in both the abstract and the text so that the abstract can
be viewed independently of the text. Follow this with up
to six key words or short phrases for indexing.
Text
It is usual but not essential to organize the text under
the following headings.
Introduction: State why the investigation was carried out,
note any relevant published work and delineate the objectives
of the investigation. The significance of the work and its
contribution to the area of study should be stated.
Materials and Methods: The methods should be briefly but
clearly explained. Procedures published previously need only
be cited as references. New and significant modifications
need complete exposition. When reporting study on human subjects,
indicate whether the procedures followed were in accordance
with the ethical standards. When reporting experiments on
animals, indicate the institution’s or a national research
councils guidelines for, or any national law on, the care
and use of laboratory animals. Describe statistical methods
with enough detail to enable a knowledgeable reader with
access to the original data to verify the reported results.
When possible, quantify findings and present them with appropriate
indicators of measurement error or uncertainty (such as confidence
intervals). Avoid relying solely on statistical hypothesis
testing, such as the use of p-values, which fails to convey
important quantitative information.
Results: The findings of the study should be concisely summarized.
Textual description of the data must be presented in tables
and figures, and duplication between the text of this section
and material presented in tables and figures should be avoided.
Discussion: The discussion section should emphasize the major
findings of the study and its significance to existent knowledge.
Information presented in the previous section should not
be repeated. Concise interpretation of the data with well-founded
speculation should be included.
Acknowledgments
Authors are responsible for recognizing and disclosing financial
and other conflicts of interest that might bias their work.
They should acknowledge in the manuscript all financial support
for the work and other financial or personal connections
to the work.
References
Number references in the order they are mentioned in the
text; do not alphabetize. In text, tables and legends, identify
references with superscript Arabic numerals. The reference
list should be arranged in the order of citation. List all
authors when six or less; for seven or more authors, list
the first three followed by et al. Journal titles should
be abbreviated according to the latest edition of Index Medicus,
if applicable. Here are some examples:

Tables
Tables should be numbered and cited in numerical order in
the text, and each should be on a separate page, numbered
in sequence in Arabic numerals (Table 1, 2, etc.), provided
with a heading, and referred to in the text as Table 1, Table
2, etc. Explanations sufficient to make the data intelligible
without reference to the text must be typed below the table
on the same page.
Figures
Figures should be numbered in Arabic numerals according to
the sequence of their appearance in the text, where they
are referred to as Figure 1, Figure 2, etc. The name of the
first author, the figure number should be written at the
corner of each figure. In case of pictures, designation of
the top of the picture figure should be clearly indicated.
Line drawings may be submitted either as printout from a
laser printer or in camera-ready form on a white background.
Figure Legends
Figure legends should be on a separate page, and should include
a brief title and a concise explanation of each figure.
Page and Other Charges
There will be a charge of JPY 3,000 (ca USD 25) per printed
page in the journal.
There will be additional charges for color illustrations,
as well as excessive or other unusual illustrative material.
In extraordinary cases, on appeal by the author, the Editorial
Board may waive the page or other charges.
Submission of Manuscripts
Upon acceptance, the final version should be submitted to the
Editor-in-Chief via email using one of the following methods:
1.Compress the files into a ZIP format and attach the ZIP file to the email.
2.Upload the files to an online storage service and provide the download link in the email.
3.Use a file transfer service and include the transfer link in the email.
Galley Proofs
Galley Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author. Changes
in the manuscript will not be allowed except printing errors.
The corrected galley proofs should be returned within 48
hours after receipt.
Reprints
Thirty reprints are offered free of charge. Additional reprints
may be ordered at prices shown in the reprint order form,
which will be sent to the corresponding author with galley
proofs.
Others
The electronic version of this article (either the published PDF or
the author’s accepted manuscript) will be deposited in the institutional
repository of Nagasaki University, NAOSITE (Nagasaki University Academic
Output SITE). The deposit will be made in accordance with the copyright and
policy of ACTA MEDICA NAGASAKIENSIA.
